The procedure itself is almost completely painless! You are awake during the entire procedure, however your eye is completely anaesthetized with drops. Your eyelid is held open with a special instrument called a speculum. While the flap is being created, you may feel some pressure on your eye. |
We recommend that you sleep for about five hours following your procedure. Your eyes may be itchy and watery. Quick healing will occur while asleep. Most patients are able to return to work within 24 hours of their procedure. Reading can be a bit of a challenge for the first week following your procedure. There is a two to four week period in which we request that you wear goggles during showering, refrain from wearing eye make-up and stay away from very dusty, dirty environments. |

All contact lenses somewhat alter the curvature of the cornea. Contact lenses must be removed prior to your initial consultation as well as before your procedure, allowing your cornea to return to its natural state. The type of lenses that you wear will determine the amount of time needed. This will be discussed with you when you book your consultation. |

You are required to be examined the next day after your procedure. Our surgeons require an examination at day seven (7) following Lasik. You will then be seen at one month, three month, six month and twelve-month periods. Most patient's vision is considered stable by the time of their six-month visit. Beyond this, visits are scheduled as deemed necessary by your IEC Laser Centers doctor. It is extremely important that you return to IEC for your annual checkup to assure that, through our continuing technological advances, you continue with good eye health. |
Most patients choose to have both eyes done on the same day. However, patients do have the option of having only one eye treated at a time. |
In the initial 3-6 month period following your procedure it is normal to have some night glare due to the healing process. This is temporary. If you have very large pupils and the surgeon feels there may be some focus problems at dusk, this will be discussed with you at your consultation. |
We encourage you to compare us to others in the industry. IEC's surgeon has performed over 10,000 successful procedures since November 1999. |
Glasses for distance should not be required. Prior to your procedure, your surgeon will discuss the potential need for reading glasses. After your procedure, glasses should only be necessary for reading if you are beyond age 40. |
Although all surgical procedures carry some risk, studies of Wavefront technology and Custom LASIK have shown better results than conventional LASIK. With this technological advancement, more people now qualify as candidates for Lasik and conventional candidates may achieve even better results with the wavefront technology. |
